Shutter Encoder 19.8 – Best Free Video Converter for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Shutter Encoder is a free, professional-grade media converter and video encoder designed by video editors for post-production workflows. Built on the powerful FFmpeg engine, it offers a vast array of functions. These range from simple format conversion to advanced codec handling and image processing. The software is available for download on Windows, macOS, and Linux, providing a comprehensive, cross-platform solution for managing video, audio, and image files.

Quick Start & Pro Tips

High-quality H.264 export for web delivery

  1. Add your source clip to Shutter Encoder.
  2. In Choose function, select Re-encode and pick H.264 as the codec.
  3. Open Advanced features > Bitrate and set 2-pass encoding with a target bitrate around 8–12 Mb/s for 1080p.
  4. Under Advanced features > GOP, keep a GOP size of 250 and enable CABAC if available.
  5. Start the encode and review the.mp4 output in your browser or player.

Why: Using 2-pass H.264 with tuned bitrate and GOP settings provides consistent quality and efficient file sizes for streaming platforms and general web playback.

Archival export to ProRes for editing systems

  1. Load your timeline or clips into the queue.
  2. In Choose function, select a ProRes profile such as ProRes 422.
  3. In Advanced features > Color, ensure the color space and gamma match your NLE project settings.
  4. Keep Bitrate at the preset values to preserve intra-frame quality.
  5. Start the job and import the resulting.mov files into your NLE for further editing.

Why: Exporting to an intra-frame codec like ProRes maintains high image fidelity and smooth scrubbing performance in editing applications compared to long-GOP H.264 or HEVC.
