Audacity is the free multitrack audio editor that quietly does the work of paid studios: record vocals, instruments, and podcasts onto a timeline, then cut and clean up the result non-destructively. Version 3.7.9 adds low-latency ASIO support to the Windows builds, so an external audio interface finally behaves properly.
Nothing is locked behind a paywall and no account is required, because the whole program is open source. Large sessions stay responsive thanks to on-demand loading, and the usual jobs are covered end to end: voice correction, noise removal, pitch and tempo tweaks, and export to MP3, WAV, FLAC, or Ogg.

Important Features
- Multitrack Recording and Mixing: Capture several sources at once from different inputs, then ride per-track gain, pan, and mute or solo until the balance is right.
- Non-Destructive Editing with Undo History: Clips can be split, trimmed, moved, stretched, and re-arranged while the original file stays intact, and any step can be rolled back or A/B compared.
- Low-Latency ASIO on Windows: New in 3.7.9, ASIO support talks directly to your audio interface for shorter round-trip delay, and the playback and recording device choice is now remembered for each host separately.
- Built-In Effect Chain: Dozens of ready effects cover the everyday fixes, including noise reduction, click removal, equalisation, compression, reverb, and change tempo or pitch, with VST, LADSPA, and Nyquist plug-ins on top.
- Wide Format Support: Work in WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP2, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis out of the box, and add FFmpeg 9 to pull audio out of M4A, AAC, AC3, WMA, or video files.
- Batch Processing: One queue applies the same chain of effects and export rules across a folder of files, which is how fifty interview clips get trimmed and normalised without clicking through them one by one.
- Repair and Analysis Tools: Find silence, locate clipped samples, notch out a hum, mark beats, and label regions, so podcast editing becomes a search-and-delete job rather than a listening marathon.
- Open Source and Genuinely Free: Released under the GPL by the Audacity Team, with no upsell screen, no watermark, and no account, while the community keeps pushing fixes and new builds.
